Abstract
La présente note de recherche offre une interprétation synthétique des années 1950. En premier lieu, il s’agit d’appliquer au Québec le concept d’autoritarisme démocratique afin de cerner l’originalité des régimes autocratiques qui s’appuient sur la légitimité du scrutin populaire. En deuxième lieu, il s’agit de revenir sur les derniers dix ans du pontificat de Pie XII, afin de souligner comment cette décennie instaure un climat nettement plus conservateur à l’échelle de la catholicité mondiale. Nous espérons montrer ainsi que le mythe de la Grande Noirceur repose sur deux réalités à la fois autonomes et complémentaires qui ont fondé, dans l’imaginaire collectif, l’opinion d’une époque essentiellement réactionnaire.
