Abstract
La Nouvelle Gestion publique est apparue dans les laboratoires d'idées néo-libérales des années 1970. Même si elle ne constitue pas la version la plus radicale des projets de réforme des États-providences, elle présente néanmoins de nombreuses continuités avec ces courants. Cet article examine successivement les grands principes de la Nouvelle Gestion publique, ses sources d'inspiration théorique et les conséquences qu'ont eues les expériences de mise en œuvre de ces nouvelles formes d'organisation et de gestion des organismes de protection sociale. L'auteur défend ici l'idée que la Nouvelle Gestion publique a fonctionné comme une pensée mythique, dont l'efficacité a peu à peu été démentie par les évaluations.
