L’article présente une approche centrée sur les relations de propriété pour théoriser la constitution, l’opération et la transformation des systèmes géopolitiques au début de l’ère moderne. Contre le paradigme répandu qui associe la codification des relations internationales modernes aux traités de Westphalie, l’article défend que la géopolitique du XVII e et XVIII e siècle repose sur des pratiques prémodernes. L’argument théorique ici est que le caractère personnalisé de la souveraineté dynastique se basait sur des relations de propriété précapitalistes. Le dynasticisme, en retour, s’est traduit en modes de conflit et de coopération historiquement spécifique gouvernés par une logique de compétition pour l’accumulation géopolitique. La rupture décisive vers la modernité internationale se produit avec l’avènement du premier État moderne : l’Angleterre. Après l’établissement d’un système de propriété agraire capitaliste et la transformation de l’État anglais au XVII e siècle, l’Angleterre post-1688 amorce une restructuration des relations internationales dans un processus à long terme de développement socialement inégal et géopolitiquement combiné.
