Abstract
Slab City, situé en Californie, à quelques kilomètres du strass et des paillettes de Palm Springs, est considéré par beaucoup comme un bidonville, un dépotoir américain au milieu du désert, dans lequel résident des personnes en détresse. En plus des stéréotypes qui bercent ce désert, Slab City inspire une image de violence ; violence faite à l’environnement et violence du parcours de vie des résidants. Cependant, derrière cette image de violence, se cache une tout autre réalité qui met en relief une communauté fondée sur la débrouillardise et la sociabilité atténuant grandement les couleurs de violence de cet environnement. Par une ethnographie de Slab City, il sera possible de jeter une lumière sur un territoire en marge de la société américaine qui représente un parfait exemple du décalage souvent existant entre image et réalité sur le thème de la violence.
