Abstract The intent of this article is to present an introductory overview of the basic concepts and testing procedures associated with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Working from a hypothesized four‐factor structure of nonacademic self‐concept (SC), as measured by 32 items from the Self Description Questionnaire, readers are introduced to both a graphical and a structural equation specification of this CFA model, followed by a review of the related procedures involved in its testing, estimation, and evaluation, together with the interpretation of results. Important issues and caveats associated with the testing of CFA models are also briefly addressed.
