Abstract
Publications about the economic and social history of New France are legion; yet few scholars have studied the reasons for the colony's relatively retarded economic development. Jean Hamelin attributes economic stagnation in New France to a shortage of capital and labour-a view found to be seriously deficient.1 Louise Dechene thinks the failure to integrate agriculture into the international trade sector-a core/periphery dichotomy mirrored in New France itself-helped maintain a generally autarkic, stagnant agricultural sector.2 W.J.
