La città sotterranea è un elemento fondamentale nella struttura urbana. Soprattutto nelle grandi città essa assume connotazioni rilevanti nella pianificazione urbana in considerazione del fatto che rappresenta una risorsa e il suo impiego può incidere significativamente sull’efficienza del sistema urbano. Alcune città, a causa soprattutto della rigidità del clima, hanno progettato città sotterranee di grande complessità funzionale; esempi significativi sono Montreal, Toronto e altre città del Nord America. In Europa occidentale le realizzazioni associabili al concetto di città sotterranea sono più limitate e sono relative soprattutto alla realizzazione di infrastrutture per la mobilità urbana, come le reti metropolitane, i passanti ferroviari, i tunnel stradali e i parcheggi sotterranei. La funzione primaria di questi spazi è la riduzione e lo spostamento dalla superficie di quote di traffico e la trasformazione di ampie parti della città in aree verdi o in aree a maggiore qualità ambientale. In ogni modo è possibile sostenere che l’uso degli spazi sotterranei è ormai entrato a far parte della vita delle città moderne. L’articolo analizza alcuni dei fattori principali nella costruzione di questi spazi urbani; i costi e i benefici dell’uso di spazi sotterranei sono messi in relazione con gli aspetti psicologici e con la costruzione di modelli per la previsione dei percorsi degli utenti. La seconda parte dell’articolo mostra alcuni casi studio evidenziando le diverse necessità che hanno spinto e hanno guidato verso la scelta degli spazi sotterranei; una analisi più dettagliata è svolta sul caso di Montreal, che può essere considerato archetipo della citta sotterranea.
