Les affixes verbalisants, impliqués en langue inuit dans le phénomène appelé «incorporation nominale», ont moins retenu l'attention pour leur sens que pour leur statut morpho-syntaxique et leur origine diachronique. Ces affixes posent cependant un problème à la description sémantique: une forme donnée correspond souvent à plusieurs sens lexicaux apparemment sans liens dans nos langues indo-européennes. Le premier objectif de cet article est de montrer, à partir de quelques exemples empruntés au tunumiisut (dialecte du Groenland oriental), que la variété superficielle des significations est un piège de la traduction, qui diffracte l'unité sémantique propre à chaque forme. Après avoir exposé le contenu des débats traditionnels concernant ces affixes, nous essayons de dégager pour quelques-uns d'entre eux leur véritable signification. Puis nous suggérons que la confusion formelle d'affixes verbalisants d'origine distincte peut donner lieu à des phénomènes de remotivation de la part des locuteurs. Un rapprochement est finalement proposé entre le sens de certains affixes de modalité verbale et la dimension aspectuelle exprimée par les affixes verbalisants.
