Abstract
Early diagnosis and direct primary repair is essential for regaining functional use of the hand following laceration of the flexor tendons. The consequences of a missed diagnosis can lead to deformity, contracture, decreased digital range of motion, and significant loss of hand function. This chapter outlines the anatomy of the hand with a focus on zone II and the flexor tendons; provides information on diagnostic approaches for correctly identifying injuries which involve laceration of the zone II flexor tendons, as well as information on the impact of surgical repair technique and materials; provides recommendations for rehabilitation based on the best available evidence and clinical experience; and relays risks and expected outcomes associated with this type of injury.
