La politique, chez Arendt, est à la fois le lieu d’un lien et d’un écart. Elle est ce qui réunit les hommes lorsqu’ils nouent entre eux des rapports normés, tout en les maintenant éloignés, en préservant la pluralité qui nourrit les relations humaines : si l’acosmisme est ce qui caractérise les peuples privés de toute confronta­tion à l’altérité, alors la politique doit permettre d’ins­taurer un espace commun qui ne soit pas négateur des différences. Mais les exemples de l’Antiquité grecque et romaine ne permettent pas de vérifier la pos­sibilité d’un tel lieu paradoxal. Au con­traire, la poli­tique comme monde commun semble toujours con­tenir une part de répression de l’altérité qui trouve son ex­pres­sion ultime dans le tota­litarisme. Entre anomie et uni­formité, l’espace de la politique est ins­table et fragile. De même, peut-être, que la démocratie, seul ré­gime susceptible de s’installer durablement dans cet espace.
