L’article propose un panorama représentatif des pratiques de prévention des risques professionnels dans les entreprises françaises. Cet objet est justifié par le niveau toujours préoccupant qu’atteignent les accidents du travail et les maladies professionnelles dans ce pays et par le fait qu’aucun panorama de ce type n’y est disponible malgré le rôle central donné aux entreprises dans la prévention des risques. L’exercice mobilise conjointement une enquête statistique conduite au milieu des années 2000 en France et une investigation de terrain réalisée dans le secteur à haut risque de la découpe de viande de volaille. Deux principaux enseignements s’en dégagent. D’une part, l’hypothèse, souvent avancée, d’une totale inertie patronale expliquant à elle seule les mauvais résultats français doit être nuancée. Il y a des disparités dont nous tentons d’éclairer les facteurs explicatifs. Pour autant, l’accentuation des injonctions réglementaires et l’alourdissement des pénalités restent des solutions envisageables pour certaines entreprises qui, en bonne santé économique, n’assument pas suffisamment leurs obligations quant au maintien en santé de leurs salariés.
