Abstract
Hypatie ou la fin des dieux de Jean Marcel joue savamment de superpositions. Un premier niveau affecte l’espace méditerranéen, donnant lieu à deux configurations antagonistes : celle de l’Empire romain, étalé sur le pourtour des rives méditerranéennes, et celle d’aujourd’hui, marquée par la ligne de force de l’imaginaire séparant l’Orient de l’Occident. Un second se rapporte au temps : le roman joue sur la confusion de deux périodes historiques, correspondant à la disparition de la culture grecque en Égypte (cinquième siècle) et à la défaite de ce pays contre Israël (1967). Un troisième affecte les personnages d’Hypatie, philosophe et mathématicienne, et de sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie, entremêlées dans une figure double, située à la croisée des imaginaires païen et chrétien.
