Les figures de l’Amérindien, telles qu’elles apparaissent dans la littérature québécoise du xixe siècle, renvoient à une époque révolue, soit mythique, soit celle de la Nouvelle-France. Certains personnages — ceux de la poésie et des romans historiques — peuplent cet « autre âge » ; d’autres ne font que l’évoquer, par une décadence qui rappelle leur gloire passée. Par une analyse de l’ambivalence des figurations manichéennes de l’Amérindien, qui répondent à certaines contraintes poétiques, et de leur affectation aux besoins d’un discours à la recherche de spécificités littéraires et identitaires, cet article propose une lecture des principes d’écriture régissant la représentation de l’Amérindien historique. Les régimes temporels s’y entrechoquent, tout en révélant un double mouvement d’appropriation et de distanciation, et une relation conflictuelle avec ces deux altérités que sont le « sauvage » et le « passé ».
