Pre de la traction avant, il fut le constructeur des fameuses et rarissimes Tracta qu'il conduira avec succs aux 24 heures du Mans. Suspension, moteur, utilisation des alliages lgers, arodynamique lui doivent des progrs tels, qu'il peut tre considr comme l'un des crateurs de l'automobile moderne en France et dans le monde. Personnage la fois classique et atypique, il a t un brillant sportif, champion de France du 100 mtres en 1917, international de saut en longueur aux jeux interallis de 1919, rugbyman, coureur automobile. Non content de briller dans ces disciplines, il a t galement critique littraire, romancier, essayiste et historien de l'automobile.
