Abstract
Conhecido como um dos mais importantes pesquisadores da punição criminal contemporânea, Álvaro Pires teve ao longo das últimas três décadas uma produção acadêmica de suma relevância para aqueles que tentam compreender a racionalidade dos sistemas penais. Titular da Cátedra de Pesquisas do Canadá em Tradições Jurídicas e Racionalidade Penal e professor há mais de 30 anos do Departamento de Criminologia da University of Ottawa, Canadá, seus trabalhos são um exemplo notável de um olhar sociológico sobre o direito que leva a sério a complexidade desse objeto de pesquisa. Nesta entrevista, ele fala de sua trajetória acadêmica entre o direito e as ciências sociais e de como a questão da interdisciplinaridade é mais uma construção do pesquisador do que uma realidade já dada sobre a qual ele se apoia. Trata também de algumas questões epistemológicas importantes, como os limites da observação científica, a impossibilidade da pesquisa em mais de um quadro disciplinar e as dificuldades que a dicotomia realismo/construtivismo coloca para a pesquisa social. Comenta, por fim, as dificuldades teóricas da pesquisa em criminologia, ressaltando os problemas de uma crítica pré-construída.
