Abstract
Dans plusieurs pays, et principalement en France, le concept de précarité est aujourd’hui bien établi dans la rhétorique institutionnelle et médiatique, dans les représentations individuelles et collectives et dans les analyses sociologiques du monde du travail. Dans cet article, l’auteur interroge le contenu de ce concept et son adéquation à la réalité du monde du travail contemporain de même que son opérationnalité dans les recherches sociologiques. Son objectif n’est pas de nier l’existence de la précarité comme phénomène social ou d’en contester l’importance, mais de dissiper certaines fausses évidences que les discours du sens commun (et certaines analyses appartenant au champ de la sociologie) mobilisent à propos de la précarité, et d’attirer l’attention sur l’application abusive de ce concept à des situations qui ne recouvrent pas, dans tous les pays, le contenu qu’on leur attribue.
