Abstract
Face à l'échec de l'école traditionnelle, l'école-recherche Jonathan, école élémentaire publique, se veut un milieu véritablement éducatif et socialisant. Le rejet des contraintes institutionnelles habituelles (programmes, classement, évaluation) a permis une nouvelle organisation du milieu physique et de la vie scolaire. L'enfant peut ainsi s'approprier son temps et son espace éducatifs, de même que son acte d'apprendre; il y développe son autonomie et apprend à se socialiser. Avec ses pairs de 5 à 12 ans et des deux sexes, l'enfant crée de nouveaux liens affectifs fondés sur la communication authentique et sur une coopération croissante (plutôt que sur la production compétitive et sur le jeu de rôle); de même, il s'initie très tôt à l'autogestion, i.e. à la prise de décision collective, à la solution de conflits et à la gestion du budget de son groupe. Avec les adultes, éducateurs et parents, l'enfant établit également de nouveaux rapports fondés sur le respect mutuel et l'amitié et sur la reconnaissance de la "valeur sociale" de chacun. L'auteur espère que des enfants eduques différemment pourront contribuer à créer une société davantage soucieuse des besoins fondamentaux de chaque être humain.
