Abstract
Interviews with 50 grades 4-8 teachers in rural communities in Canada's 10 provinces show that these teachers generally perceive that school and urban writing involve a broader range of forms and purposes than primarily working class rural writing. In spite of these views of the limitations of writing within their communities, 30% of teachers brought school and community writing together through such activities as writing contests and an Authors' Night for students to read their writing to a gathering of community members. Participating teachers' teaching practices are research-supported and they use computers to teach writing to some degree. Further research is needed to determine how to support rural students' writing, however, as rural students are not doing as well as their urban counterparts in large-scale writing tests.
