Abstract
A partir de divers matériaux ethnographiques recueillis dans plusieurs régions du Nord canadien, ce texte traite de la fonction offensive du chamanisme inuit. L’auteur s’intéresse au rôle du chamane dans la reproduction du désordre et des conflits inter-familiaux. Même si l’histoire récente et avec elle la multiplication des disparités sociales a contribué à différencier chamanisme et sorcellerie, ces pratiques appartiennent au même complexe symbolique. Le chamanisme inuit apparaît comme un système foncièrement instable et le chamane comme une personne ressource en même temps qu’une menace permanente pour sa propre société. Cette ambivalence explique l’attitude des aînés qui, tout en valorisant les traditions chamaniques restent aujourd’hui encore très réticents à l’idée d’un retour à ces pratiques.
