Abstract
Résumé Si l’histoire des relations entre socialistes et gaullistes est connue, le prisme local en donne une autre image. À partir du cas marseillais, cet article montre combien les hommes, les cultures et les configurations politiques locales façonnèrent cette histoire : au temps de l’opposition, lorsque les gaullistes emportent la mairie en 1947, succède le temps de l’alliance, entre 1953 et 1965, après la victoire du socialiste Gaston Defferre. Dès lors, la scène politique marseillaise constitue le négatif de l’histoire nationale : les gaullistes dans l’opposition, les socialistes au pouvoir. Cette histoire « par le bas » montre donc comment la Section française de l’Internationale ouvrière (SFIO) est parvenue à surmonter l’épreuve de la Cinquième République, en se repliant sur ses positions locales. A contrario , l’incapacité des gaullistes à reconquérir la mairie après 1953 est examinée à l’aune des difficultés du gaullisme à pénétrer les pouvoirs locaux.
