Abstract
Traditionnellement bercé par l’illusion selon laquelle l’artiste est libre de la société dans laquelle il vit, le monde de l’art subit depuis une quinzaine d’années l’influence d’une seconde idéologie, celle de l’égalité des cultures sur la scène artistique, de l’abolition des frontières avec la globalisation et le métissage. Pourtant, en considérant différents indicateurs objectifs dont les uns se rapportent au pôle marchand (ventes aux enchères et foires d’art contemporain) et les autres au pôle institutionnel (musées, centres d’art contemporain et biennales), il est en réalité possible de faire apparaître une hiérarchie extrêmement forte et presque identique quels que soient les indicateurs considérés. Les États-Unis arrivent largement en tête, l’Allemagne occupe une très confortable deuxième position, quatre autres pays occidentaux se détachent plus modestement — Grande-Bretagne, Italie, France et Suisse —, tandis que le reste du globe, et toute la sphère non occidentale en particulier, reste largement exclu du monde l’art contemporain international.
