Abstract
Si le Gould virtuose du piano est bien connu, le Gould compositeur l’est beaucoup moins. Pourtant sa démarche se manifeste très tôt dans ses projets d’écriture ambitieux – musiques de chambre, opéras, symphonies – et dans son attitude négative à l’égard de sa vie de concertiste l’empêchant de se réaliser. Sa demi-retraite de la scène en 1962 – soit deux ans avant de mettre fin définitivement à sa carrière de concertiste – constitue une première étape dans l’accomplissement du rêve de sa vie : devenir compositeur et pouvoir se consacrer entièrement à l’évolution de l’écriture déjà amorcée dans le passé. Cet article propose une visite dans ce vaste atelier de création regroupant les activités compositionnelles de Gould et ses idées sur la musique de son temps, telles que représentées surtout dans sa correspondance.
