Abstract
Vingt ans après les faits, la chute du Mur et l’unification allemande nous semblent être des événements entièrement « historisés », c’est-à-dire qu’ils appartiennent désormais au passé. Cela est dû au fait que, ces vingt dernières années, l’accès aux archives de l’ancienne République démocratique allemande (RDA) a été largement facilité, faisant de l’histoire de ce pays un champ de recherche très fructueux. Les historiens se sont notamment penchés sur le fonctionnement du système politique et social, y compris le travail de la « Stasi », sur les relations avec l’étranger et sur l’histoire de la chute du Mur et de l’unification en 1989/90. Hormis certains détails, on ne peut plus s’attendre à de grandes révélations concernant l’unification allemande. Mais il reste encore à aborder la question de la « légitimité » de la RDA, à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du pays, car c’est l’un des aspects qui peut expliquer l’effondrement complet et si rapide du pouvoir du SED ainsi que la fin brutale de la RDA. Enfin, il y a un autre grand champ de recherche : celui des conséquences de l’unification. Grâce à elle et à la chute du Mur, l’ancienne République fédérale d’Allemagne (RFA) ne s’est pas seulement agrandie, ses structures et ses traditions ont changé, mais elle s’est aussi transformée au plan politique, « européanisée » et « normalisée » en n’oubliant pas pour autant le poids de son histoire particulière.
