Abstract
Un relief inscrit inédit, apparu sur le marché de l’art en 2000, montre le dieu Mithra tauroctone. À partir d’une norme iconographique issue de la répétition de thèmes particuliers, des variantes existent dans la représentation du sacrifice rituel. Le relief de New York reproduit la composition la plus courante, mais on doit s’interroger sur l’absence de Cautès et de Sol. La question posée est de déterminer si le relief a été détaché d’un ensemble plus large ou s’il s’agit d’une adaptation locale à la norme, pouvant provenir d’une communauté provinciale éloignée des centres cultuels majeurs ou provenir d’un atelier non familiarisé avec l’imagerie mithriaque, ce qui était probablement le cas des ateliers provinciaux aux iie et iiie siècles. La facture n’est du reste pas celle d’un atelier romain.
