Abstract
This article examines the urban politics of sustainability. It describes some of the concrete dilemmas present in today's urban development, where growth and environment/nature are repositioned toward each other in novel ways. The article outlines some of the major historical developments through which the notion of sustainability has been linked to cities and discusses major conceptual debates that relate to urban sustainability. It argues that a new urban “politics of nature” must, by necessity, address ecological relationships in the context of human sociality.
