Abstract
Le pouvoir royal a fait l’objet de nombreuses discussions et de multiples ecrits au Moyen Âge. Or la plupart de ces discussions portaient surtout sur le necessaire equilibre de ce pouvoir avec l’autorite sacerdotale – equilibre erige en ideal. Ces dissensions entre auctoritas et potestas culminent a l’epoque charniere entre le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance ou une crise triple intervient : politique avec l’election imperiale, religieuse avec la Reforme et la Contre-Reforme, intellectuelle avec l’avenement de l’heliocentrisme. L’ensemble de stalles de la collegiale de Montreal (Yonne, Bourgogne), datant des environs de 1520, fait reference a ce contexte trouble a travers un projet iconographique presentant deux exemples de dominations face a face : le pouvoir royal d’un cote et l’autorite sacerdotale de l’autre.
