Au Québec, les pôles primaires, secondaires et tertiaires identifiés en 1966 ont servi de base pour établir un modèle descriptif et normatif de l’organisation spatiale. La hiérarchie de centres urbains alors établie devait en principe supporter le drainage, la transformation et la diffusion des facteurs du développement. Trente ans après cette interprétation qui a soutenu l’initiation de politiques publiques dans le cadre d’une stratégie de polarisation en des lieux ciblés, on constate que le développement socio-économique n’est pas tout à fait conforme au modèle initial. L’agglomération de Montréal n’est pas à la hauteur de son rôle moteur. La plupart des centres intermédiaires stagnent. Par contre, certains lieux et certains territoires s’affirment fortement. De nouveaux pôles émergent. Et des corridors de développement se dessinent hors de l’axe traditionnel du Saint-Laurent. Finalement, le Québec assiste à un phénomène de recentrage spatial de son développement socio-économique. Ce qui nous amène à préciser que la dynamique spatiale québécoise nécessite une nouvelle modélisation pour laquelle ce texte offre une modeste contribution.
