Abstract
L’analyse s’appuie sur les données qualitatives recueillies au cours d’une enquête qui associait entretiens compréhensifs et observations menées dans des espaces du quotidien (principalement domestiques et professionnels). Elle vise à caractériser certaines des ressources que l’usager d’un vêtement peut mobiliser pour s’accommoder du renouvellement des formes et des styles que l’industrie de la mode impose sans relâche. L’article examine d’abord les conditions empiriques de possibilité de la typification du « démodé » et du « hors-mode », en cherchant à tirer parti du jeu de la pluralité des médiations marchandes et non marchandes dont elles se révèlent tributaires. Il entreprend, ensuite, d’éclairer les processus à travers lesquels les vêtements ainsi catégorisés peuvent néanmoins échapper à la disqualification, au remisage ou à la mise au rebus. Sont alors mises en évidence différentes tactiques de recomposition du rapport au vêtement, dont l’efficacité confirme l’intérêt d’étudier les objets comme des productions continues.
