Abstract
L'institution de l'État providence a été marquée par la création de toute une série de programmes sociaux destinés à améliorer les conditions de vie des personnes âgées. Ces développements majeurs ont consacré l'institutionnalisation du vieillissement en induisant une association formelle entre l'âge de 60 ou 65 ans et l'entrée dans la vieillesse. La situation financière, sanitaire et sociale des personnes âgées a toutefois considérablement évolué au cours des trente dernières années. On ne vieillit plus aujourd'hui de la même façon qu'hier. Il est donc devenu légitime de questionner la viabilité des politiques du vieillissement et leur capacité de répondre adéquatement aux nouveaux besoins des personnes âgées. Cet article synthétise une revue de littérature effectuée sur ce thème et qui a pour principal centre d'intérêt le Canada. Elle inclut aussi d'autres pays.
