Abstract
Le dernier roman de Mordecai Richler, Barney’s Version (1997), s’il propose sous la forme des mémoires un récit autobiographique du personnage de Barney Panofsky, déploie un sous-texte rempli de références culturelles et mémorielles qui en appelle à une communauté de lecteurs élus par une même connaissance des signes textuels de la judéité. Cet article tente d’abord de montrer comment est (ré)activé ce réseau dans la construction d’une bibliothèque imaginaire érigée en lieu de mémoire permettant le legs patrilinéaire. Sur ces bases, il dégage ensuite en quoi l’anglais « yiddishifié » de Richler est un lieu de sédimentation de l’identitaire judaïque, et opère comme une modalité du rite, c’est-à-dire dans un double mouvement d’ouverture à l’élection d’une communauté et de repli sur le secret — moyen de préserver l’accès aux signes aux initiés, à la manière du schibboleth.
