Abstract
Fernand Dumont (1927-1997), sociologue, philosophe, essayiste et poète, peut être considéré comme l’un des grands penseurs québécois de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Son influence a été considérable au cours des décennies qui ont suivi la Révolution tranquille au Québec. Dans cet article, l’accent est mis sur un aspect de cette œuvre à la fois riche et complexe : le rapport que Dumont établit entre la mémoire et l’horizon des sociétés dans le cadre de sa théorie générale de la culture. Comment se construisent les sociétés? Qu’est-ce qui leur donne une cohérence? Pour Dumont, le recours à l’histoire s’avère incontournable pour expliquer leur formation et leur caractère unique. Face à l’avenir qui demeure incertain, l’histoire rappelle qu’il y a toujours décision, incertitude, choix et interprétation. Ce recours au passé permet d’éclairer la crise de la culture engendrée par la modernité. Dans la seconde partie de cet article, Fernand Dumont analyse le passé et les perspectives d’avenir de la société québécoise à la lumière de sa théorie de la culture.
