Abstract
El concepto de multifuncionalidad se utiliza por primera vez en la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo celebrada en Rio de Janeiro en 1992 (Cumbre de Rio). A partir de este momento se multiplican los estudios y las aproximaciones teoricas a dicho concepto, al mismo tiempo que su uso es cada vez mas frecuente en los foros internacionales, como sucede en los casos de la celebracion del cincuenta aniversario de la creacion de la FAO (Declaracion de Quebec, 1995) y de la Declaracion de Ministros de la OCDE en 1998. Incluso la Union Europea (UE) asume enseguida los conceptos de multifuncionalidad rural y de pluriactividad campesina como bandera de su reforma de la Politica Agricola Comun (PAC) en 1992, conceptos que se consolidan y difunden con la denominada Agenda 2000 (1997), documento que establece las bases economico-financieras de la UE para el periodo 2000-2006.
