Abstract
Financial institutions occupy a central role inequity and debt markets, providing the finance thatshapes economic development and thus environmentalpressures. Environmental regulation has traditionallyfocused on development itself but not those thatfinancially sponsor developers. To achieve anenvironmentally sustainable economy in Canada, newregulations and policies to promote environmentallyfriendly financing in the financial services sector arenecessary. This article explains why financingenvironmental change is crucial, surveys the mainprivate financial institutions in Canada relevant to thistask, and makes recommendations on how financialregulation and its broader institutional context can bereformed to support sustainable development.
