A leitura do artigo de Mauro Chaves, “A falta de caráter canadense”, publicado na pág. 2 de O Estado de São Paulo em 10 de fevereiro de 2001, deixou-me entre estarrecido e consternado. Estarrecido pelo desconhecimento e falta de informação que o artigo demonstra; consternado, pela atitude de desprezo e intolerância que induz. Morei ao todo três anos no Canadá e já visitei o país várias vezes nos últimos vinte anos, quase sempre a trabalho. Conheço as Universidades de Montreal, de Laval, na cidade de Quebec, a de Toronto, a McGill e a Universidade de Quebec em Montreal (Uqam). O intercâmbio entre Universidades brasileiras e canadenses é extenso e intenso, abrangendo um sem número de áreas do conhecimento. No Brasil existe uma Associação Brasileira de Estudos Canadenses, com Núcleos em Universidades de Norte a Sul do país. Sou pai de uma cidadã canadense, cujo nascimento, em 1981, e o posterior cuidado pediátrico propiciou-me um contato estreito com o sólido e organizado sistema de saúde pública local. Em nada o Canadá que eu conheço se parece com o país inóspito e insosso descrito no artigo de Mauro Chaves.
