Abstract
L’essor du théâtre francophone au Canada est relié à une mise en discours dans la presse de ce qui travaille à confirmer la race dans ses valeurs (langue, morale, famille). Sous cet angle, le discours sur Labiche, par exemple, marque les limites assignées au comique populaire, incompatible avec une idéologie de la survivance variable selon le contexte (Québec/diaspora canadienne-française). Dès lors, le rire suscité atteste moins de l’épanouissement de la culture populaire que de l’effet insidieux de la doxa, encore que la culture de masse entraîne en contrepartie la décentralisation de l’Église qui se rabat sur le théâtre collégial et amateur.
