Abstract
Résumé La présente étude propose une analyse empirique de la convergence régionale au Canada fondée sur le modèle de croissance d’une économie ouverte avec parfaite mobilité des capitaux de Barro, Mankiw et Sala-I-Martin (1995). L’impossibilité pour un débiteur de mettre son capital humain en nantissement limite la capacité d’une économie d’emprunter à l’étranger. La dynamique d’accumulation du capital humain devient alors le moteur de la croissance économique agrégée. Comme l’établit la théorie, un ensemble d’indicateurs de capital humain a convergé à une vitesse similaire à différentes mesures de revenu par habitant durant la période 1951-1996. Une partie importante de la croissance relative des provinces canadiennes s’explique par la croissance relative du stock de capital humain mesuré par la proportion de la population des deux sexes, ou des hommes seulement, ayant obtenu un diplôme universitaire.
