Abstract
This introductory statement contextualizes the subsequent four presentations by Anette Guse, Lynne Tatlock, Karolin Moser, and John A. McCarthy. In the first three, the state of German Studies in the USA, Canada, and Latin America is examined, concluding with a summary article that provides an assessment and suggestions for how the profession might appropriately respond to changing demographics and intellectual shifts.
