Les changements socio-démographiques recensés dans la plupart des pays développés, au cours des trente dernières années, conduisent à un double constat. Tout d'abord, ils affectent tant les structures économiques que les structures familiales. Ensuite, on est frappé de la concomitance des évolutions. C'est pourquoi on doit analyser conjointement, et non plus séparément, le travail et la famille. La reconstruction des catégories de la pratique que ces changements véhiculent engage, en effet, à reconsidérer les catégories de l'analyse. C'est le sens de l'approche centrée autour de la notion de " division familiale du travail ". De fait, on assiste à une restructuration des rapports sociaux à l'intérieur de la famille comme de la société où se mettent en place de nouveaux modes de régulation. Familale, marchande ou politique, cette régulation sociétale varie suivant les pays, les moments, dans un jeu complexe entre institutions.
