Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The paper draws from a recently completed manuscript Doing the Continental: A Short Guide to a New Relationship with the USA which is in part a polemic for general readers where the author does from time to time involve himself in the treatment. This paper also has those elements. It argues, we need to outgrow a habit of fighting for or against an imperial connection, moving beyond the paradigm of debate structured by the ideological clash of left-nationalists and rightcontinentalists. The manuscript is 40,000 words - a short book to be published in soft cover. This paper draws from about 20 percent of the manuscript and focuses on issues and principles specifically associated with effective management of the relationship.Doing the Continental has a chapter on the Avro Arrow where some of the manuscript's themes are first introduced and another called Beyond our shared continent, Canada and the world. As well, this paper does not touch upon a central section of the manuscript called Dance Venues which consists of chapters on Mexico, Energy, Water, the Arctic, and Manifest Destiny and Quebec.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
