Abstract
Abstract As first quarter‐master general of the German army, Ludendorff dominated military affairs during the second half of World War I. In his memoirs he misleadingly characterized his relationship with Field Marshal von Hindenburg as one of “the most perfect harmony,” but he resented the acclaim given his superior, believing with much justification that most of the credit belonged to him. He, however, was not prepared to accept responsibility when things went disastrously wrong during Germany's failed bid to win a victor's peace in 1918. Instead, he blamed the army's defeat on the collapse of the home front and popularized the myth that the soldiers had been “stabbed in the back” by Jews and socialists.
