Abstract
Les immigrés vivent plus souvent que les « natifs » des conflits de valeurs. Chez leurs adolescents, ces conflits peuvent mener à la rupture familiale, mais surtout à des sentiments de rejet et à une image négative de soi et des autres. La crise d'identité s'aggrave si les messages envoyés par l'environnement social sont contradictoires ou incohérents. S'ils ont un caractère négatif, l'image de soi est menacée par la dévalorisation. C'est le cas des stéréotypes racistes et des réactions xénophobes. La réponse la plus dangereuse est l'intériorisation de l'image dévalorisée. Des jeunes réagissent agressivement ou refoulent l'expérience raciste en la niant. Pour certains, l'assimilation recherchée peut aller jusqu'à mépriser leur propre communauté. À l'inverse, d'autres valorisent leurs différences, stratégie qui peut mener à l'engagement politique et qui n'est pas non plus à l'abri d'excès. Ces diverses stratégies dépendent de facteurs spécifiques: traits culturels, courants politiques, liens communautaires.
