L’abandon unilatéral du système de protection tarifaire en 1986 et la signature, en 1992, de l’Accord de libre-échange nord-américain ont profondément marqué l’économie mexicaine. Orientée vers l’exportation, tournée vers les États-Unis et le marché nord-américain, celle-ci s’est modernisée, au prix toutefois d’importantes restructurations. Le cas du secteur automobile est à cet égard exemplaire. L’article qui suit analyse les transformations dans ce secteur dans le District fédéral. L’auteure utilise les données des recensements et s’appuie sur les résultats d’une enquête menée auprès des entreprises. Il en ressort que, malgré certaines difficultés, les grandes et moyennes entreprises sont en condition de fournir directement les usines de montage lorsqu’elles sont en mesure de s’adapter et répondre à leurs exigences. Le texte met en évidence le cas de la micro-entreprise TIER 1 qui travaille pour Volkswagen. Cette entreprise a démontré sa capacité d’apprentissage technologique sans avoir reçu l’appui de cette compagnie.
