Abstract
This chapter considers wave propagation in infinite periodic multilayers. It first demonstrates that when the multilayer period is much smaller than the wavelength of light, then wave propagation in such structured materials is equivalent to wave propagation in the effective anisotropic dielectric. The authors then derive of analytical expressions for the principal values of the material effective dielectric tensor and then study the validity of the effective medium approximation.
