A diversidade cultural, tema corrente na agenda acadêmica, é também uma questão política com largos efeitos na vida social, exigindo de instituições como a escola que repense suas práticas e os aparatos teórico-metodológicos que sustentam seus planos de ensino. Analisamos neste artigo, com base em contribuições teóricas dos estudos culturais (WILLIAMS, 1992; HALL, 2003; BHABHA, 2007), de que modo o tópico da diversidade cultural é abordado no livro didático de língua portuguesa, com atenção aos textos literários e exercícios de retomada. A partir dos resultados, refletimos sobre o ensino da literatura na perspectiva cultural.
