Abstract
Professeure d'anthropologie à l'Université d'Ottawa, l'auteure présente dans un ouvrage très substantiel les fruits d'une longue pratique d'enquêtes menées sur le terrain parmi les peuples autochtones de l'aire circumpolaire ; elle aborde sous cet angle les grandes questions théoriques relatives au chamanisme, mais toujours à la lumière d'observations concrètes circonstanciées.Parmi les ethnies très diverses qu'elle a fréquentées assidûment, elle choisit ici les Nabesnat'ane qui vivent dans la partie centrale de « l'immense territoire des Athapaskans septentrionaux à l'Ouest de la frontière entre le Yukon et l'Alaska ».Les Nabesna (ou « Dénés ») forment un groupe assez restreint, comprenant tout au plus un demi-millier de membres.
