S’appuyant sur un travail de terrain conduit dans un espace de bavardage électronique du réseau Internet, l’auteure décrit quelques-unes des modalités de l’échange en ligne qui sont adoptées par les adeptes du bavardage et montre, en s’attachant au contenu des échanges, de quelle manière la pratique permet aux internautes d’expérimenter l’espace électronique comme un « lieu », qu’on occupe d’abord pour être avec les autres. Les échanges, en apparence vides de tout contenu communiqué, permettent avant tout aux internautes d’occuper l’espace électronique pour lui donner corps et pour partager un temps commun avec les autres, comme on pourrait le faire dans ces lieux que sont le bistro ou le café, où ce qui se dit n’importe pas tant que le simple fait d’être avec les autres. Replaçant ces pratiques de bavardage dans le contexte des existences et des temporalités hors ligne de ceux et celles qui s’y adonnent, la démarche montre ce qu’est le cadre de l’expérience individuelle dans lequel trouve son sens la construction d’un lieu virtuel permettant de partager son temps avec les autres.
