Les caractéristiques spatio-temporelles de la neige en été, en Ungava, ont été étudiées par photo-interprétation. Les photographies analysées ont été extraites de lignes de vol choisies en fonction de leur date et de leur localisation ou selon un échantillonnage effectué d'après la grille de référence des cartes topographiques à 1/50 000 du Canada. Sur les photographies, on a calculé la superficie couverte par la neige ou le nombre de plaques de neige. Les résultats indiquent que les surfaces enneigées varient d'un été à l'autre, selon l'importance des chutes de neige survenue l'hiver précédent. Les hivers les plus neigeux ont des températures un peu moins froides et des flux atmosphériques du nord-est plus importants. En été, le résidu nival le plus important se situe au sud des côtes du détroit d'Hudson. Le résidu nival disparaît progressivement, entre les mois de juin et d'août, du sud-ouest vers le nord-est de l'Ungava. Actuellement, la surface occupée par la neige en été semble plus importante que pendant les années 1950, du moins le long de la côte ouest de la baie d'Ungava. En période d'englaciation, la côte sud du détroit d'Hudson pourrait être un lieu favorable à la naissance d'une calotte glaciaire.
