Abstract Questions of stability and change are at the forefront of clinical, personality, and developmental psychology. In the current entry, five different types of stability are defined (mean‐level, rank‐order, stability of variance, structural stability, and individual differences in stability), with examples regarding how and why researchers would address each form. Following this, mechanisms that promote stability are discussed, with a focus on why individuals become more stable later in life.
