Des dépôts coquilliers récents et d'âge holocène ont été récoltés dans les régions côtières de Chao et Santa, au nord-ouest du Pérou. Ces assemblages ont été analysés pour leurs teneurs en isotopes lourds (13C,18O) dans le but de reconstituer les changements paléogéographiques et paléoclimatiques. Une attention particulière a été portée au mollusque Trachycardium procerum afin d'examiner la signature isotopique du phénomène de type El Niho enregistrée dans la coquille par des anomalies de croissance. Les données M C obtenues sur les dépôts coquilliers indiquent un haut niveau marin dès 6500 BP. À Santa, entre 6500 et 4000 BP, une lagune a été isolée de l'océan par un cordon majeur. La présence d'une faune « panaméenne chaude » et sa signature isotopique particulière (fortes teneurs en 18O), contrastant avec la faune péruvienne « froide » des milieux littoraux ouverts, semblent appuyer cette interprétation. Par la suite, une série de cordons littoraux s'est formée à l'ouest de la paléolagune. Dans la région de Chao, une paléobaie s'est comblée, plus tardivement, derrière une flèche littorale, jusqu'à 2850 BP environ. Aucun changement significatif dans les conditions côtières n'a été enregistré à Chao durant l'Holocène. Les profils isotopiques établis sur deux valves récentes de Trachycardium procerum, présentant une anomalie de croissance attribuée à l'EI Niho de 1982-83, sont comparables. Une forte diminution de teneur en 18O (~1,7%o) marque l'augmentation de la température de l'eau de surface lors de cet événement. Les teneurs en13C, corrigées pour l'effet thermique, rendent compte d'une forte diminution des flux de carbone organique, lors de cet événement, donc d'une baisse de la productivité primaire.
