Abstract
RÉSUMÉ- L'identité nationale est d'abord le résultat historique et, à ce titre, provisoire d'une lutte symbolique dans le champ de l'imaginaire grâce à laquelle se crée le sentiment d'une appartenance commune. Au XIXe siècle, la première version de l'histoire-mémoire brésilienne a élaboré une triade érigeant le colonisateur blanc en porteur de culture, l'Indien en symbole de la nature et réduisant le nègre au rang de simple outil de travail. Au cœur du processus de construction de l'identité brésilienne, la tension entre le local et l'universel a toujours été forte : « ceci » est une terre, une nature et une population préexistant à la découverte — et « cela » est identifié à la civilisation occidentale, arrivée avec les nefs portugaises. Le dos tourné à l'Amérique latine et, d'une certaine manière aussi, à son peuple pauvre et métis, le Brésil a toujours eu le Premier monde comme horizon de son identité.
